Each year the American Legion nationally awards more than $140,000 in
scholarship funds to local high schools students. Locally Post 59 will award $250 to the first place winner, who will then proceed the state level then onto Nationals where the top three finalist can win $25,000, $22,500 and $20,000 respectively in scholarships toward their college education. Please read the following documents for information on the American Legion Oratorical Contests and how to apply. Post 59 Oratorical Letter (Please note the dates for the Oratorical letter are: Post competition January 8, 2022; District competition January 16, 2022; Regional competition January 23, 2022.) If you are considering VT next year, take a look at the Pamplin Leadership Award: https://honorscollege.vt.edu/Scholarships/recruitment.html (scroll down to the Pamplin Scholars Program tab). The $5,000 one-year, merit-based academic scholarship acknowledges students who demonstrate superior intellectual promise, academic performance, dedication to their communities, interest and success in physical fitness and health, and unimpeachable integrity. Applicants must have a 3.8 or better GPA. (This award/scholarship is for any VT freshmen, not only for Pamplin Business students.) BHS may nominate one student for the award. If you are selected as the BHS nominee you will receive information on how to apply for the award. DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1, 2021 The local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will award a $1,000 to a local graduating senior. Applicants must submit a cover letter, applicant data (more detail in attachment), 3 letters of reference, and a 500-800 word essay on some positive topic related to the the American Revolution.
